We have an interview with Blu coming up. One of his frequent collaborators is Co$$. Calling South Central his home, its only right that we feature him. This track that he just released is supposed to be on his album produced by Numonics. He grabbed Gary Indiana's finest Freddie Gibbs on this track to rap about what else??? SMOKING!!!

I really like how this short film shows a side of Nipsey Hu$$le that doesnt get shown via the media check it out!

"LA is My Playground" is a short film about the subculture of burgeoning LA Hip-Hop acts starring Nipsey HussleDOM Kennedy & Pac Div (with a special guest appearance by David Banner). The film captures a once in a lifetime experience of these artists on their rise to stardom. Each artist has a song in the film that directly relates to LA; Showtime-DOM Kennedy, The Mayor-Pac Div, Hometown-Nipsey Hussle, demonstrating different places in their career.

Eagle Rock Music Festival 10/02/10
Posted by Belvi on Oct 12, 2010

Even after living in Eagle Rock for the past 5 years, an event gathering thousands of music and culture lovers had repeatedly slipped past my radar. But not this year.

The anticipation of an afternoon music festival bled a sizable energy into my normally slow-paced town. Thai restaraunt parking lots became stadiums. Crosswalks became arenas. The town became one swarming music potluck. Roughly 7 to 8,000 (or more) tune-hungry on-lookers piled into a 6 block span for over 7 hours. Neither distance or the recent abnormal weather patterns kept them away.

The music itself was what you would expect from an immense underground/indie showcase- a buffet.  Electro, House, Dance, Dubstep, Hip-Hop, French Quarter Jazz, Latin, Indie, Emo, this, that, and a little bit more played all day.

Children ran, screaming, oblivious to decorum. And those were just the kids my age. When dusk fell, and parents left, deciding the aroma of barley and hops was a tad too malodorous for their toddlers and pre-teens, the joyous fever rose. Arbitrarily,  the 7-Eleven employees tried to funnel consumers in, 8 at a time, for their Millers and Marlboros. The pork and red-meat restaurant, The Oinkster, surprisingly made a killing in the health-conscious hipsterville that is Colorado Blvd.

Yes, yes, the hipsters had their day in the sun. They infested the streets with their usual "earth conscious" garb, their American Apparel glittering skinnys, their short-shorts, high boots, and sun-hats. And, of course, their fixed gear bikes and Granny glasses. Indeed, hipsters created a suffocating atmosphere for almost anyone geuinely interested in the music and culture, and not necessarily the look behind it.

Still, underground music gods such as The Gaslamp Killer, Dj Nobody, The Egyptian Lover and Arabian Prince, Lucky Dragons and Nocando, basked under purple and blue hue lights, and big screen or wall projections, while manic fans chanted, flung their hands upward to the clear sky and reveled in an event they will surely be talking about long until next year's. All that for a $5 donation.

Versis - The Journey (4U)

Here's some new music for yall to get familiar with...Versis hit me up via Facebook and hipped me to a new joint he's pushing entitled, "The Journey (4U)". He linked up with Dibia$e for a very smooth & hypnotizing track. The sound is real reminiscent of Pharcyde records. There's something about Versis that makes me gravitates towards his music. Maybe its the fact that he spits from the soul, heart, & is completely honest in all that he does. Take a listen to this song to get a vibe for his upcoming project, "iLLCANDESCENT" that will be released on 8.9.10

Intro to Richard Wright
Posted by Val the Vandle on Jul 2, 2010

For the past 4 weeks my close colleague, Richard Wright, has released 4 mixtapes. One mixtape per week. In a time where MC's are here today and gone tomorrow, Richard Wright (aka Rich For A Reason) proves his lyrical capabilities are not to be tested. With Project Blowed & the Spliff as Rich's stomping grounds, there's no reason why you shouldn't give each of these "random" mixtapes a listen. Features are held to a minimum - Belvi, Skeem Price, Stego, & Mr. Sobers are the only collabs. With productions ranging from J Bizness & Vann Clayton to Bangladesh & Q-Tip, the beat-side of these projects compliment each verse. With a round about of 6  tracks in each mixtape, (which could've easily been pasted together as 1 whole mixtape) there is definitely enough time to digest each song in a single sitting. Check em out!

FAB 5 FREDDY x LA STEREO
Posted by M Boogie on Jul 1, 2010

Please install the latest Flash player.

No need to introduce  Fab 5 Freddy here. I was fortunate enough to spend a lttle time with him in his studio during my short stay in NYC.

It's hard to resume Fab's fundamental contribution to hip hop culture. In a few words, Fab talks us through his relationship with Basquiat and Warhol, his vision as a producer on "Wild Style", his role in the birth of hip hop as an international movement, Yo! MTV Raps, and hip hop the culture vs its more mainstream appeal.

A big shoutout to my friend J Kevin Swain for setting up the interview.

JimiJames Is "So Janky"
Posted by Nicole Dawley on Jun 30, 2010

Here at LA Stereo, we like to lend our ears to good music from the far and wide regions of the world, but, we always like to show our local artists love. Meet JimiJames aka Rah Rah Girl, a singer-songwriter born and bred right here in Los Angeles or according to her Myspace page, "Los Jankymess," a play on her latest album So Janky. She describes her sound as Gritti-pop—popular music that is “sexy, funky, edgy, uninhibited.”  I have been listening to her for over a year now, and I can  tell she has so much fun with her music. She can go from sultry to sassy in a millisecond all while keeping her cool.

New Music from King Fantastic
Posted by Val the Vandle on Jun 29, 2010

A couple days ago, a cool/smart friend hipped to this new group called, King Fantastic. He told me to check em out and give my honest my opinion. When I downloaded the album, I was blown away, My ears were pleased to hear something NEW & FRESH!

KING FANTASTIC = Reese One (of Bleu Collar) & Troublemaker (Producer/DJ)

Now, King Fantastic's album is called "Finger Snaps & Gun Claps", but can best be described as Westcoastsynthesizerbeachbumgangstermusic - the stand out track. After a few listens to the project you can get a vibe of a very distinct LA, one that fuses the electro/hiphop/party/dance.

This album is for those people that appreciate a new sound, looking for a descriptive outlook on the Los Angeles lifestyle. As expansive LA is will be a direct influence on how contrasting this album is. But enough of me talking my side, take a few minutes to download the project and check out their store, they got some crazy exclusives, packaging, & memorabilia.

The Counterpoint.
Posted by Belvi on May 2, 2010
Establishing anything new is never easy. Ask the forefathers and mothers of any nation, movement, or even just your regular, old music genre. On behalf of all those of my generation, all praises due to the ground-breakers that made the today we live in, well, the today we live in. Still, it seems this resounding appreciation takes no merit to those we look up to.

No matter how many young artists rave about the artists of yesteryear that made them who they are today, rap's "old farts" just aren't content with their stature in the game's history. Ice cube, Ice T, even Vanilla Ice got in on the "you owe me/you'll never measure up to my era" racket. What must a young rapper do?

Sure, the bygone days of rap hold a prestige that subsequent generations may never touch. However, saying that the new breed is forever indebted to every former star and old hack of the Hip Hop's infancy is an overstatement.

Au contraire old man. These young pups are every bit the hip hop knuckleheads you were. Young, fresh and new. Game changers, and as a matter of fact, older models could stand to learn a thing or two from these young bucks.

One lesson could be the youths forward thinking. Harkening back to the good ole days is great for perspective, though not great for application. Where would rap be if we clung to '89? Bye bye Snoop. Sayonara Tha Dogg Pound. Tupac? Take a hike.

Another suggestion: more hunger, less talk. I was raised on a staple axiom in hip hop: "stay hungry." In their old age, rappers seem to want to rest upon their laurels, as if any one of them are bigger than the game. The younger, less experienced, less acclaimed rappers, however, work as though they've found no satisfaction in their accomplishments. They remain, consistently, in search of new elements to tackle and fresh frontiers to brave. All in the name of making their marks in hip hop, while moving the proverbial chains.

When it's all said and done, and Hip Hop has run its course, then the veterans can look for their merit badges and awards. As for now, there's more work to be done, more challenges to conquer, and the game marches on.
