You Oughta Know: J1
Posted by Rebecca Haithcoat on May 24, 2010

“I don’t have to be the center of attention, but I like to be a part of the action.”

As a drummer, producer, and DJ, J1 is not only just a part of the action; he’s usually creating the action.

From teaching himself how to play the drums in his hometown of Cleveland to linking up with some of the most progressive musicians on the funkscape of his adopted city of Los Angeles, J1 demonstrates himself dedicated, passionate, and, in his words, “straight to the point.”

While living in San Francisco, J1 visited L.A. and happened upon the now-legendary Do Over party, where he found himself surrounded by many of the very people, such as DJs House Shoes and Aloe Blacc, he respected most.  That, combined with the Eden-like weather, sealed him, and he decided right then and there to move.

It proved to be a wise snap decision, indeed. In his three short years since relocating, J1 has become affiliated with Shafiq Husayn’s En’AFreeKa Ensemble as well as Animal Kingdom.  He’s released several beat tapes and podcasts through Heavyweight Production House (HVW8), including “Attack of The Deer” and “The You Tube EP.”  After a completely improvised Super Session at HVW8 Art + Design Gallery, Master Blazter, comprised of Computer Jay, Dam Funk, and J1, has grown to be one of the foremost bands on the funk/soul/boogie scene.  Expect solo releases, as well as a break beat album, from J1’s 2010.

His artistic integrity and resolute work ethic account for much of his recent success.  By applying that same approach to every collaborative venture, J1 helps artists realize their visions while staying true to himself and the funk. Quietly observant and keenly focused, he’s always at the eye of the storm of people having a good time.

What else is there to add other than "J Rocc is the best Dj in the world" (House Shoes) . Watch his crazy DJ moves shot on HouseShoes Bday at Shoes House. Oh and when the Brazilian beats came on, that's when the filming had to make place to the feet shuffling.

For years this track has been listed in France as one of the greatest (and the earliest) transantlantic collab: MC Solaar (the real one) and GURU Jazzmatazz! Here with Fab 5 Freddy. RIP Guru. Incidentally (or maybe not so incidentally) this video was directed by my friend J. Kevin Swain.

Questlove just brought up on Twitter an earlier 1991 remix by Guru with a Miles Davis flip of on one of my fave Solaar's tracks Qui Seme le Vent Recolte le Tempo. Check it out.

Strong Arm Steady + Planet Asia & Tri-State come to drop "In Search of Stoney Jackson" at Fats Beats with J. Rock. Hawdwerk interviews them about their collaboration with producer Madlib. They discuss the organic process behind the making of the album and the several meanings of the album's title. Check them out also performing "True Love".  Shot and edited by yours truly.

Don't miss this excellent documentary on VH1 next week directed and produced by my friend J. Kevin Swain who's also done a mulitute of music videos featuring Tupac, etc.
Soul Train originated in Chicago (Cornelius was close to civil rights activists like Jesse Jackson) but quickly moved to LA. It struck me how dance trends has always been a vital part of LA culture as revealed in this film. There are many more things to delve upon, and with an original soundtrack by Questlove from The Roots, there isn't one moment off beat in this film.
Premiering on Friday Feb 5th at 9pm. Look out for the repeats.
