Girls like Lee Shaner.  Girls like Intuition.  Girls like rappers.  One of the above has to fit the crossword puzzle I’m mentally working as I sit across from Lee Shaner, a.k.a. Intuition, a.k.a. rapper, in a booth in Silverlake diner Brite Spot.  He’s asked me to write an artist bio for him, and is telling me lots of strategic stories (his words, not mine), but I’m not listening.

Until he finishes the thought:  “People that listen to my music will know more about me than they would ever know about me by my talking to them.”  And I get it.  Girls like Intuition because he appeals to their deepest, junior-high-school day-dreamiest, selves:  He writes songs for them.

Granted, the song might be the jingly-jangly, country-tinged, Main Ingredient-sampling “Lonely,” an ode to the girl(s?) who never refuses his late-night invitation to offer ministrations, but you gotta give him a little credit for honesty.  He’s not trying to pull anything but their shirts over their eyes.

Girls love a challenge, though, and songs like that serve only to re-up their efforts to wrestle the slightly jaded, rambler-by-birth Intuition to a commitment.  Born in Texas, the Air Force landed his family in the North Pole shortly thereafter, and he couldn’t wait to get out.  “There are no shows in Alaska.  Not just no rap shows.  The three concerts I went to in Alaska were Weird Al, Los Lobos, and Great White.”

He chose the diametric opposite, of course, when he made his escape.  He knew he’d live somewhere in Southern California, and by 2000 he found his way to Pomona.  He gorged on the shows he’d been missing growing up, and gained a reputation in the ciphers that broke out between acts.

In 2003, Intuition was living in Santa Barbara, and had dropped off copies of his demo in a record store with instructions for the employees to give a copy to anybody who came in and bought “some underground shit.”  Mark Pawlak, better known as Equalibrum, Intuition’s primary producer, was one recipient. He liked the demo, and the first time they met, Intuition told him, “Yo, we should make an album- we’re gonna be famous.”

Something worked with the pairing, or “musical fucking soul brothers”- Lee had been trying for a year and a half to book a show in Santa Barbara, and within two weeks of meeting Mark, got his first.

He started writing “Girls Like Me” two years ago, when he moved to Los Angeles. While his first album, “Stories About Nothing” relied heavily on inspired fabrication, “there’s not a single lie on ‘Girls Like Me.’ If someone doesn’t like this album, that person won’t like me.”

Besides being forthright, the album reflects Intuition’s ethic: work smarter, not harder. He writes for a reason, and that conservation of energy produces lean records ready to pounce.  His rhymes and vocal control are meticulous; even his relaxed flow on the “Al Bundy” and “Don’t Try” hooks is deliberately so. “I have a tattoo of a brain over my heart. Is [my] heart my brain; do I only think with logic? Do I even have a heart?”

“Girls Like Me” is indeed why girls (and guys, grudgingly or admiringly) like Intuition. And plenty of them are praying he not only has a heart, but that it’ll be theirs.  I imagine he’ll loan it out, at least for the night.

Intuition's record release party for "Girls Like Me" is tonight at Low End Theory.  Change up the game and go hit on him on MySpace or Twitter.

Don't miss this excellent documentary on VH1 next week directed and produced by my friend J. Kevin Swain.
Soul Train originated in Chicago (Cornelius was close to civil rights activists like Jesse Jackson) but quickly moved to LA. It struck me how dance trends has always been a vital part of LA culture as revealed in this film. There are many more things to delve upon, and with an original soundtrack by Questlove from The Roots, there isn't one moment off beat in this film.
Premiering on Friday Feb 5th at 9pm. Look out for the repeats.

Paid Dues 2010 Lineup
Posted by Val the Vandle on Feb 1, 2010
It's that time again, as the spring rears its head for the new decade, we have the PAID DUES line-up.
I'm hella excited to see ICE CUBE
(could this be the return of the Westside Connection?).
I'm also glad to see THA DOGG POUND reunion show. DAZ & KURUPT are some of the illest emcees on the westcoast.
A BIG GROUP to watch is RANDOM AXE - BLACK MILK GUILTY SIMPSON & SEAN PRICE.
Shout out to MURS, STRONG ARM STEADY, DILATED PEOPLES & DEL THE FUNKYHOMOSAPIEN for keeping the westcoast indie scene on top. It's nice to see DOM KENNEDY, DUMBFOUNDEAD, & HOPIESPITSHARD on the bill as well. They definitely deserve it.

Intuition is dropping his new album "Girls Like Me" in a week, his album release party is on Wednesday at Low End Theory. GO!
We were told at last Spliff that VerBS & Intuition were making new material for their fruitful collab.
You can always check them out here for VerBS and here for Intuition. Go download The Buzz, one of the best projects to come out of 2009.

Top Ten in "O'10": The East
Posted by Belvi on Jan 30, 2010
East
    1. Diamond District - A trio from D.C. with soulful and sonically pleasing music. A blend of Dilla soul and Mf Doom weird. Note: they are not producers.
    2. X.O. - excellent beat selections and a style that is small part Kanye and a small part 50 Cent (ironic, I know).
    3. Kooley High - talented and energetic group out of North Carolina fueled by a general love for good music.
    4. Tanya Morgan - Not a woman. Not an emo rock group. Three Rappers. But they pose a bit of a problem. Two members are from the midwest, Cincinnati to be exact. The other is from Brooklyn. So maybe I include them on both lists.
    5. Theophilus London - Nowadays, in the Kanye effected Hip Hop world, electronica/dub-step mixed rap is all the rage and if listeners can either pronounce or get over his name, NY's Theophilus London might be next in line.
    6. Wiz Khalifa - another in a long line of Lil Wayne style rappers except Wiz Khalifa, representing Pittsburgh, has an element of sincerity in his music that seems to set him apart from the rest. With time he'll grow into his own artist.
    7. Outasight - hearing his projects for the last couple of years have led me to the conclusion that New York's Outasight is a new breed of Caucasian MC. Versatile enough to sing and rap with similarities to Kanye West.
    8. French Montana - though not born in the states French Montana hails from Bronx, New York. He is reminiscent to early aught rappers from Dipset and and D-block.
    9. Mickey Factz - Westcoast "New West" style, eastcoast rap bravado and delivery. That pretty much sums up this on the rise artist out of the raps womb, Bronx, New York.
    10. MGMT - If you hear this Brooklyn, New York group's name and don't get what the fuss is you probably haven't heard "Electric Feel." MGMT is about as in the ether, bongwater, modern day counter-culture as a budding pop group can get, but their music is just too damn good to ignore.

Review: Lite - Out To Lunch
Posted by Belvi on Jan 29, 2010
Young talent is nothing new on the L.A. scene. But Lite is different. Lite is a complex concoction of hood bravado and soulful compassion. In his latest project, Out To Lunch, the remarkable thing is how subtly he shows both. He is fearlessly honest. Everything from poverty to masturbation, which are not hallmark topics in rap no matter which way you slice it. Out To Lunch is wrought with so much humanity that his every-man-sensibilities can give the feeling that he is reading your mind. It has almost limitless range to jump from "Smoke to That" to "Golden" to "Never Over". Lite is also a brilliant storyteller. All over, if graded:

Lyrics: 9

Flow/Rhyme scheme - 9

Style - 8.5

Beat selection - 8.5

Listenability - 8.5

Overall = A

Lite is a young talent you be hard pressed to find an accurate comparison for. But download Out To Lunch and judge for yourself.
